ultimate guide to skincare beauty fridges

If you’ve been scrolling Instagram and YouTube you will see that skincare fridges are very popular right now. In this post, I’ll explain what a skincare fridge is, its proclaimed benefits, what kinds of products you can store in them, and finally, a roundup of best skincare fridges you can buy on Amazon.

What is a skincare fridge?

First, the basics – what is a skincare fridge anyway?

Well, the easiest way to describe it is a mini-mini fridge where you can store your skincare products. The sizes of skincare fridges usually range between 4 liters to 15 liters. Anything bigger than that, you’re probably looking more at a traditional mini-fridge.

In this Elle article, it is recommended that the temperature of skincare/beauty fridges be set between 55 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. Some skincare fridges I have found on Amazon stores it at a lower preset temperature of 35-45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Why would you need a skincare fridge?

Even though there are skeptics about this trend, I personally think there are actually some pretty good reasons to keep your skincare cool in a fridge.

Extending the shelf life: From launching many skincare products over the course of my career, I know that skincare products go through rigorous stability testing before they’re allowed to be introduced into the market. Skincare products also have a recommended shelf life, which is why it’s always a good idea to clean out your shelfie every once in a while.

After products are open, they’re exposed to bacteria and other micro-organisms (unless your product is stored in airless packaging) which means storing them in lower temperatures may help keep the growth of these bacteria at bay. After all, no one wants to use stale, oxidized, or expired skincare products!

Feels great!: Nothing feels better than a nice cold sheet mask on a hot, humid day. Also, if you happen to have skin irritation – like a sunburn for example, aloe vera gel fresh from the skincare fridge will help to calm your skin.

Now you may be wondering why you need a special fridge just for skincare – can’t you just toss it in your regular refrigerator? The short answer is yes, you definitely can if you only have a couple of things you want to chill.

But your regular fridge probably also has food, drinks, and other items – to reduce risk of contaminating your skincare with additional bacteria, it may be a good idea to store it separately.

Can skincare fridges maximize the efficacy of my skincare?

There’s little testing to support the idea that refrigerating skincare products helps to maximize its efficiency or potency, so I’d be wary about seeing products that make this claim. I do know, however, that if you’re using all natural/organic/homemade skincare products, or a prescribed medicated product from a dermatologist, proper storage may include putting them in a refrigerator.

What products can I store in a skincare fridge?

The following products are all good candidates be stored in a skincare fridge:

  • Sheet masks
  • Eye Creams/Eye Masks – great for de-puffing tired/swollen eyes
  • Creams and Moisturizers
  • Serums
  • Ingredients that are not as stable (Vitamin C for example)
  • Natural/organic skincare products
  • Aloe Vera Gels
  • Masks

Personally, I would leave things like oils and petroleum jellies out of the fridge because they tend to harden and be hard to use when chilled.

What size skincare fridge should I buy?

It depends on how much skincare you’re looking to store. After browsing online at some popular options, I see around three sizes that skincare fridges generally come in. Here’s my estimation of what may fit in each of these sizes:

  • 4 Liter – 2 shelves (fits about 6 small jars/bottles), plus a side bar for sheet masks/tools
  • 10 Liter – 2 shelves (fits about 10-12 small jars/bottles), plus a side bar for sheet masks/tools)
  • 15 Liter – 3 shelves (fits about 15-20 small jars/bottles), plus two side bars for sheet masks/tools)

What benefits to look for

Features: There is a wide range of benefits, depending on the brand you choose. Some not only have cool/low temperature settings, but also warming settings as well.

Portability: Some skincare fridges come with handles for easy portability, in case you want to bring it on the go.

Charging options: Many of these skincare fridges come with both AC and DC charging options so you can charge at home or in the car.

Stylish: Let’s face it, having one of these adorable mini fridges to store skincare products is #shelfiegoals. They come in a wide variety of styles and colors to brighten anyone’s day.
